Innovative, FMIPA UNEJ PKM-RE Team Overcomes Shrimp Pond Waste Using Shrimp Shell Biofocculant

The PKM-Riset Eksakta Team, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Jember, headed by Rikma Dwi Mukharomah from the Chemistry Department, converted shrimp shells into chitosan, which was applied as a bioflocculant for treating waste water in shrimp ponds. This research team consists of Masrurotul Alfiah, Imelda Dwi Puspita, and Ka’aziyah Aulia Nada from the Chemistry Department and Indah Febrian from the Biology Department. Dr. Bambang Piluharto, S.Si., M.Si., from Department of Chemistry, FMIPA, was appointed as supervisor of the PKM-Exact Research Team, which won funding for the 8 Bidang Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa (PKM) in 2023.

“This research is expected to be an alternative to processing waste water from shrimp ponds,” said Rikma Dwi Mukharomah. The research was carried out for 4 months, starting June 16, 2023, at the Physical Chemistry and Organic Chemistry Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, FMIPA, University of Jember. Furthermore, Rikma explained that chitosan-based bioflocculant is synthesized from shrimp shells through several stages, including deproteination, demineralization, and deacetylation. “The result obtained after the deproteination and demineralization processes is chitin, while from the chitin deacetylation process, chitosan is obtained,” she explained. Ready to Work After Graduation: Two FMIPA UNEJ Alumni Share Their Experiences

Jember University’s FMIPA Alumni Sharing was held again to welcome the graduation for the 3rd academic year 2023-2024 (6/10). Presenting two FMIPA alumni who provided experience entering the world of work after the graduation procession. Andy Setyawan, an alumni of the 2007 FMIPA Mathematics Department, started sharing his experiences with prospective graduates. “You need an advantage to compete with other job seekers, to be a differentiator so that companies will pay attention,” he began. Andy said that after graduating with a high GPA, it turned out that he needed to be supported by other capable skills. The ability to think critically, be quick and efficient, be able to multitask, and be ready to work under pressure is also required.

“We must have this in order to be able to compete with other prospective workers, especially since the company we are targeting is a large company,” said Andy, who currently serves as Control Room and Patroller Team Leader at PT. Solusi Bangun Indonesia, Tuban. He also said that when he applied for a job in the past, he armed himself with more skills in processing data via Excel. “Maybe you all ask, Why Excel? Because if we master Excel, it will be able to process thousands of pieces of data quickly and accurately,” he continued. Continue reading

Parasitic Plants: Sharing Session Lecture on Parasitology by Dr. Zaiton Sapak from Universiti Teknologi MARA Malaysia

Dr. Zaiton Sapak from Universiti Teknologi MARA Malaysia delivered material on parasitic plants in the Parasitology Lecture Sharing session (3/10). Parasitic plants, or parasitic plants, are organisms that settle on host plants through special organs. “This special organ develops and penetrates the host’s vascular tissue and meets the nutritional, water, and mineral needs of the host plant,” began Dr. Zaiton Sapak. It is said that nearly 4,500 species in 28 families, representing 1% of all angiosperm species, utilize the vascular systems of other plants to meet their nutritional needs.

Sharing session guided by Purwatiningsih, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D. The lecturer at the Department of Biology also explained that parasitic plants are divided into several types, seen as being photosynthetically active (hemiparasites), lacking photosynthetic activity, completely bound to the host for carbon (holoparasites), optional or obligate parasites, and attached to the roots or stems of their hosts. “Parasitic plants” grow in agroecosystems with low biodiversity, and their presence causes huge yield losses on agricultural land,” said Dr. Zaiton Sapak. Four Universiti Teknologi MARA Malaysia students took part in International Student Mobility in Biology, FMIPA UNEJ

Four students from the Faculty of Plantation and Agrotechnology University Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Malaysia will take part in International Student Mobility in Biology FMIPA UNEJ. “Welcome to Indonesia, the city of Jember, and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences; hopefully, in 4 months, you will all be comfortable carrying out the International Mobility Student program,” said Drs. Achmad Sjaifullah, M.Sc., Ph.D. The Dean of FMIPA was accompanied by the Deputy Deans in welcoming the arrival of students from Malaysia (25/9). The work practice agenda at the Pusat Penelitian Kopi dan Kakao Indonesia and PT. Mitra Tani 27 has been prepared by FMIPA for these four students.

Nurul Alya bint Hamdan, Wan Nur Hafizah bint Wan Mohamad Nor, Muhamad Zarul Ikhwan bin Roslan from the Agribusiness Program, and Siti Hajar Natashah bint Samsudin from the Plant Biotechnology Program will become Jember residents in the future. “The language may be more or less the same; the food may also be; adapt immediately; if there are any difficulties, immediately communicate with us,” said the Dean of FMIPA at UNEJ. Prof. Tamio Oguchi from Osaka University, Japan Visits FMIPA Physics Ready to Establish Collaboration

Prof. Tamio Oguchi visited the Physics Department, FMIPA, University of Jember to carry out research collaboration with Dr. Artoto Arkundato through the Applied Materials and Energy Computing Research Group (18/9). Prof. Tamio Oguchi from the Center for Spintronics Research Network (CSRN) OSAKA University Japan at the start of the visit met with the leadership of FMIPA UNEJ to discuss collaboration while enjoying authentic coffee from Japan. “It is an honor for us to have a visit from Prof. Tamio Oguchi from Japan so that in the future we can explore collaboration with FMIPA,” said the Dean of FMIPA UNEJ Drs. Achmad Sjaifullah, M.Sc., Ph.D.

Next, Prof. Oguchi met the head of the Physics Department headed by Dr Agus Suprianto together with physics lecturers led by Dra. Arry Yuariatun Nurhayati, M.Si. discussing CSRN at Osaka University. For your information, Prof. Tamio Oguchi has come several times to the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Physics Department on a guest lecture agenda in 2018 and was the keynote speaker at the 2021 International Conference on Physical Instrumentation and Advanced Materials (ICPIAM). “Prof. Ogochi has become more familiar with us because he has come several times, it’s time for us “discuss more massively about CSRN, so that it can have a good impact on all of us,” said Dr. Artoto Arkundato. Dean of FMIPA UNEJ Officially Opens PPMB FMIPA Jember University in 2023

Located in the FMIPA UNEJ parking lot, Drs. Achmad Sjaifullah, M.Sc., Ph.D., officially opened the Pembinaan dan Pengembangan Mahasiswa Baru (PPMB) at FMIPA Jember University in 2023 (16/9). “This year’s PPMB implementation will be fully offline again, which will be carried out every Saturday from September 9 to September 30, 2023,” he said. The Dean of FMIPA UNEJ hopes that all new students will be able to manage their time and maintain their health so they can take part in PPMB 2023 amidst the busy schedule of lectures from morning to evening with mandatory courses that must be taken.

“Manage your time as best as possible, maintain your diet, and rest because PPMB 2023 at the weekend is when your energy is fully devoted to lectures and practicums,” he advised. Like last year, FMIPA UNEJ will focus on the Program Kreativitas Mahasiswa (PKM). There will be material on controlling ideas and PKM writing training. FMIPA concentrates on PKM because it hopes that with the many new students this year, there will be several groups that will be able to penetrate the national level.
