FMIPA UNEJ and KPH Perhutani Jember Sign a Cooperation Agreement to Strengthen the Tri Dharma of Higher Education

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of the University of Jember and the Perhutani Forest Management Unit (KPH) of Jember officially signed a Cooperation Agreement (PKS) as a follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the East Java Regional Division of Perhutani and the University of Jember (March 12). The collaboration between the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of the University of Jember and Perhutani has been ongoing since 2017. At that time, a team of FMIPA lecturers, along with the Perhutani KPH of the Jember region, developed a High Conservation Value (HCV) document. This was followed by regular training for Perhutani field staff, facilitated by the FMIPA lecturer team, to increase their capacity in collecting and analyzing biodiversity and environmental quality data.

Various collaborative activities have been carried out over the past few years, but they do not yet have a formal legal basis in the form of a cooperation agreement. Since early 2026, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of the University of Jember (UNEJ) and the State Forestry Company (Perhutani) have initiated a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their partnership in facilitating the implementation of the Three Pillars of Higher Education (Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi). The MoU was signed today by the Administrator of the Perhutani Forest Management Unit (KPH) in Jember, Eko Teguh Prasetyo, and the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of UNEJ, Prof. Drs. Dafik, M.Sc., Ph.D., as a commitment to strengthening the implementation of the Three Pillars of Higher Education, which encompass education, research, and community service within the Perhutani KPH Jember work area. FMIPA UNEJ and the KPH Perhutani of Jember Strengthen Biodiversity Collaboration in Forest Areas

The Forest Management Unit (KPH) of Jember, along with the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of Jember University, conducted a biodiversity inventory and observation in the Sumberjati RPH of the Sempolan Forest Management Unit (BKPH Sempolan) and the Grintingan RPH of the Wuluhan Forest Management Unit (BKPH Wuluhan) (February 25th). This activity demonstrated the synergy between forest managers and educational institutions in supporting environmental conservation. The Administrator of the Perhutani KPH Jember, Eko Teguh Prasetyo, through the Head of the Environment and Occupational Health and Safety Sub-Section, Ety Sri Wulandari, stated that this collaboration was no ordinary field activity. “This biodiversity activity represents our commitment to opening up collaboration with universities. Forests are not only managed for production, but also for maintaining their ecological function. Students can learn directly, and we obtain important data on the condition of flora and fauna in the field,” said Ety.

According to her, identifying flora and fauna and observing ecosystem conditions are crucial as the basis for sustainable forest management planning. The data obtained can later serve as a reference for policy-making and conservation programs. Meanwhile, the Supervising Lecturer and Vice Dean I of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Jember (UNEJ), Prof. Hari Sulistyowati, expressed her appreciation for the full support from Perhutani KPH Jember. “We are very grateful for this opportunity. Students not only learn theory in the classroom, but also gain a first-hand understanding of the dynamics of forest ecosystems. This is a valuable experience for fostering awareness and responsibility for environmental sustainability,” she said. Continue reading
