The Department of Biology, FMIPA, University of Jember held the 5th International Conference on Life Sciences and Biotechnology (ICOLIB) 2023 on a hybrid basis (12–13/9). ICOLIB is an international seminar scheduled every two years. The first ICOLIB was held in 2015, and in 2023, this will be the fifth event. Taking the theme “Global Insights and Innovations of Life Sciences Research in the Post-COVID-19 Era,” the topic is applied sciences, basic sciences, biodiversity and bio-conservation, and health and medicine. Keynote speakers were presented from several countries, including Indonesia as the host.
The 5th ICOLIB 2023 was officially opened online by Iwan Taruna, Rector of University of Jember. In his message, Rector invited researchers involved in ICOLIB to exchange information on research results after being hampered by the pandemic for some time. “ICOLIB is a place to share the research results of researchers, and this is very relevant to the vision of the University of Jember, namely to make the university superior in the development of environmentally friendly science, technology, and arts, business, and industrial agriculture,” he said. At the end of the Rector’s speech, he hoped that UNEJ would continue to carry out scientific research through international seminars as one of its means.
In his report, Chairman of the 5th ICOLIB 2023 Committee, Dr. rer. nat. Fuad Bahrul Ulum, S.Si., M.Sc., said that this year’s presentation was attended by 134 researchers from several universities and BRIN. “I report that the 5th ICOLIB 2023 will present 6 key speakers, 134 researchers from various Indonesian universities, including BRIN. The event will last for 2 days, with the composition of each day being a plenary session and a parallel session,” he said.
The keynote speaker who delivered material on the first day was Dr. Asmoro Lelono from the Biology Department, FMIPA UNEJ offline, with moderator M. Su’udi, Ph.D. Continued by Dr. rer. nat. Arif Luqman, S.Sc., MT, from the Biology Department, ITS Surabaya. We continued with parallel session 1, which was divided into four rooms according to the topics raised. After that, we again presented the keynote speaker online, Prof. Dr. Thirumalaisamy P. Velavan from the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Universitätsklinikum Tübingen, Germany, with moderator Dr. rer. nat. Kartika Senjarini, S.Si., M.Sc., and the first day closed with parallel session 2.

The second day began with the delivery of material by the key speaker, Prof. Sisunandar, Ph.D., from the Department of Biology Education, Muhammadiyah University Purwokerto, with moderator Ari Satia Nugraha, SF, GdipSc., M.Sc., Ph.D. online. Followed by a presentation from Dr. rer. nat. Abdul Hadi Suwandi from the Institute of Cell Biochemistry, Medizinische Hochschule Hannover, Germany. After that, parallel sessions continued sequentially (3 and 4), which were divided into 4 rooms according to the topic. In the afternoon, Dr. Diego Hojsgaard from the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK), Germany, with moderator Dr. rer. nat. Fuad Bahrul Ulum, S.Si., M.Sc., and the 5th ICOLIB 2023 event closed with the submission of a 2-day activity report and evaluation from the Chair of the Committee.
