Joint Lecture of Master of Biology FMIPA UNEJ: Prof. Amin Setyo Laksono, Ph. D. from Brawijaya University

Prof. Amin Setyo Laksono, Ph.D., from Brawijaya University gave a lecture with Master of Biology students, FMIPA UNEJ, and Doctoral Program UB (30/10). Conducted online with tropical biodiversity courses. Discussion on landscape ecology, which is a very potential field for ecological studies. “Landscape ecology is a science that integrates geography and ecosystem approaches on a large landscape scale and various levels of biological organization,” explained Prof. Amin. Furthermore, the structure, function, and changes in landscape ecology were explained.

“Spatial relationships between different ecosystems or landscape elements in the landscape ecological structure,” he continued. The joint lecture was moderated by Purwatiningsih, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D., a lecturer in biology at FMIPA. Prof. Amin explained the function of landscape ecology regarding the interaction between spatial elements, namely the flow of energy, matter, and species between ecosystem components or landscape elements. The participants of the joint lecture were enthusiastic to listen to the explanation from Prof. Amin, who is the first Professor at FMIPA Universitas Brawijaya. Continue reading

Biology Department, FMIPA, University of Jember Presents Biotechnology Expert Dr. M. Kamaraj from India

Department of Biology FMIPA UNEJ presents Dr. M. Kamaraj, Associate Professor and HoD of Department of Biotechnology, Faculty of Science and Humanities Ramapuram Campus, SRM Institute of Science and Technology, India (9-11/10). A series of events for 3 days were officially opened by Dr. Retno Wimbaningrum, M.Si., as the Head of the Biology Department, FMIPA UNEJ. The first day began with a guest lecture agenda with the theme “Current biotechnology for environmental assessment and monitoring.” Moderated by Purwatiningsih, Ph.D., the lecture was attended by lecturers and biology students. “Biotechnology is changing the way we monitor and assess the environment using innovative, precise, and efficient tools,” began Dr. M. Kamaraj.

It is said that biotechnology is changing the way we monitor and assess the environment by offering innovative, precise, and efficient tools. “The application of this technology will improve sustainability efforts, encourage better resource management, and support environmental mitigation,” he continued. The guest lecture also provided an opportunity for discussion with participants. The next agenda item was a visit to the sub-labs in the Department of Biology such as ecology, zoology, botany, microbiology, and biotechnology. At the end of the first day’s agenda, Dr. M. Kamaraj was invited to visit the CDAST & IsDB building and met Prof. Dr. Bambang Sugiharto, M.AgrSc. Continue reading

FMIPA UNEJ Holds The Second International Basic Science Conference (IBSC) 2024

The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Jember, held the Second International Basic Science Conference, or IBSC 2024 (8/10). Held in the 3rd floor of the UNEJ Entrepreneurship Building, this year the theme was “AI at the Frontier of Natural Sciences: Trends and Future Directions.” Presenting keynote speakers: Prof. Dr. Ismail Naci CANGÜL from Bursa Uludag University, Turkey; Dr. S. Stalin from SASTRA Deemed to be University, India; Prof. Dr. Ing. Hendro Wicaksono from Constructor University Bremen gGmbH, Germany; and Dr. M. Kamaraj from SRM Institute of Science and Technology, India. The 2nd IBSC 2024 was held in a hybrid manner, attended by 53 participants, and Dr. M. Kamaraj from India was present at UNEJ to provide material.

The 2nd IBSC 2024 was officially opened by Prof. Drs. Bambang Kuswandi, M.Sc., Ph.D., Vice Rector of UNEJ for planning, cooperation, and information systems. In his speech, Prof. Bambang said that IBSC is a conference to disseminate knowledge, interact with experts, and strengthen professional networks. “IBSC is a forum for discussion and sharing to support the advancement of science and technology,” he said. It is hoped that the output of the conference discussing the theme of artificial intelligence will be able to make natural science the forefront of future trends and directions of research. Lecturers and Students of Biology Study Program, FMIPA UNEJ Win Second Winner in International Competition at NTU Taiwan

Arif Mohammad Siddiq, S.Si., M.Si., and Nayla Adila Taqiyya, lecturers and students of the Biology Study Program, FMIPA, who are members of the University of Jember team, managed to get the “Second Winner.” (3/10). The award was won at the 19th APRU Multi-Hazards Symposium international competition at National Taiwan University. “This event is a reputable international event attended by 52 finalists from 10 countries,” said Arif. The participating countries are the United States, Nigeria, China, Taiwan, Mexico, Japan, India, Singapore, the Philippines, and Indonesia. “Biology students from FMIPA are members of the UNEJ team together with students from FKEP, FT, FISIP, and FEB, with 2 lecturers from FMIPA and FT as supervisors,” he continued.

The symposium was organized by the Center for Weather and Climate Disaster Research (WCDR) of National Taiwan University (NTU). The activity took place at the GIS NTU Convention Center Taipei on October 1–3, 2024. This year’s theme is “Forging Sustainable and Resilient Futures: Science, Technology, and Innovation for Disaster Risk Reduction.” Several disasters and environmental issues are the topics of the competition. “The issues raised and discussed on this year’s agenda include earthquakes, weather, geological conservation, and water-related disasters,” explained Arif. Guest Lecture Biology FMIPA UNEJ: Dr. Mohd Noor Hisham Mohd Nadzir from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM)

Dr. Mohd Noor Hisham Mohd Nadzir from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Universiti Putra Malaysia, returned to give a guest lecture on Animal Physiology (20/9). With the theme “Endocrinology & Reproductive Physiology of Beef Cattle,” the guest lecture was attended by students of the Animal Physiology course, Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Jember online. At the beginning of the material, Dr. Noor Hisham introduced endocrinology. “Endocrinology is the study of hormones, and hormones are very important for daily survival as chemical messengers that move from one cell to another,” he explained. This guest lecture was moderated by Purwatiningsih, S.Si., M.Si., Ph.D.

It is said that scientifically, hormones communicate this effect through their unique chemical structure, which is recognized by specific receptors on their target cells. “Hormones will tell us or animals how to control various physiological activities, such as growth, development, puberty, alertness levels, sugar and appetite regulation, bone growth, and stress,” he explained. In short, hormones influence aspects of our daily lives to ensure that the body maintains the balance necessary for health and survival. Continue reading

Three UNEJ FMIPA Students Become National Level ONMIPA-PT Finalists in 2024

Three students from the MIPA Faculty of Jember University successfully passed the regional level selection and were entitled to become finalists in the Olimpiade Nasional Matematika dan Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam (ONMIPA-PT) 2024. They consisted of Ragil Wahyu Utomo from the Biology Department, FMIPA, Masrurotul Alfiah, and Novian Rico Saputra from the Chemistry Department, FMIPA. National-level ONMIPA-PT activities will be held offline from May 12 to 17, 2024, at Hasanuddin University, Makassar. “It is an honor for the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the University of Jember to be able to send representatives to compete in prestigious student events at the national level,” said Dr. Edy Supriyanto, S.Si., M.Si. PIC ONMIPA-PT University of Jember and Vice Dean III FMIPA UNEJ.

Previously, 20 University of Jember students from FMIPA, FKIP, and the Faculty of Medicine took part in the regional-level selection on April 24–25. Located in Mathematics Laboratory 1 and 2, FMIPA UNEJ Mathematics Department, UNEJ delegates took part in online selection according to the fields being competed in, namely mathematics, physics, biology, and chemistry. “The Jember University delegation are the best students who we have selected at the university level and were given intensive assistance before taking part in the regional level selection,” he continued..
