Department of Biology FMIPA UNEJ held The Fourth International Confrerence on Life Sciences and Biotechnology (ICOLIB) 2021

Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Jember held The 4th International Conference on Life Sciences and Biotechnology (ICOLIB) 2021 online (15-16/11). ICOLIB is an international seminar which is held every two years. The first ICOLIB was held in 2015, followed by second in 2017, and the third in 2019. In 2021, The 4th ICOLIB has the theme “Towards Sustainable Development: Application of Biosciences to Improve Welfare and Quality of Life“. The Topics of 4th ICOLIB 2021 are Applied Sciences: Agriculture, Biotechnology & Bioinformatics, Basic Sciences: Ecology, Zoology, Botany, Microbiology, Biodiversity & Bio-coverservation, Health & Medicine: Pharmacy & Medical Sciences. The 4th ICOLIB 2021 presents 6 Keynote Speakers are Jorge A. Santiago, Ph.D. from the National Museum of Natural History, Washington, District of Columbia, USA, Prof. Dr. Ir. Antonius Suwanto, M.Sc. from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Mathematics, Bogor Agricultural University, Bogor, Indonesia, Prof. Elvira Horandl from the University of Goettingen, Germany, Prof. Simon C Griffith from the Department of Biological Sciences Macquarie University, Sydney, NSW 2109, Australia, Prof. A.G.G. Groothuis and Dr. rer. nat. Christina Bauch from Department of Behavioural Biology, University of Groningen, Netherlands and Dr. Kahar Muzakhar, S.Si. Department of Biology, University of Jember. Dr. Asmoro Lelono, M.Si as chairman of The 4th ICOLIB 2021 said that more than 100 researchers sent their articles to follow this agenda. “Incoming articles will be reviewed by experts in their fields to be published in Atlantis Press – part of Springer Nature,” he explained. In organizing The 4th ICOLIB, it also received support from The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and Vanadia Utama.

Dean of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Jember, Drs. Achmad Sjaifullah, M.Sc., Ph.D. in his speech said that even during the pandemic, it was not an constraint to exchanging information, especially in terms of research. “After this pandemic period is over, we can meet offline to be able to exchange research results and hold collaborations,” he said. The event was officially opened by Rektor of University of Jember, Dr. Ir. Iwan Taruna, M.Eng. IPM and advised that through the ICOLIB event, it is hoped that they can share knowledge about the development of science and its application. “I hope that ICOLIB which is one of the agendas for the 57th anniversary of the University of Jember as well as the 21st anniversary of FMIPA can contribute to research in accordance with the Tridharma Perguruan Tinggi and of course vision and mission of University of Jember,” he said at opening ceremony which was guided by Duta Kampus Universitas Jember.

Plenary Session first day session one was guided by Dr. rer.nat. Kartika Senjarini, S.Si., M.Sc. presenting keynote speaker Jorge A. Santiago, Ph.D. with presentation Principles, Biological Concepts, and Historical Context of Heredity Before Mendel and Prof. Dr. Ir. Antonius Suwanto, M.Sc. with presentation Microbiome and Natural Protection to Covid19. Participants discussion was opened for two keynote speakers after presentation. After sponsorship session, event continued with Parallel Session session one which was divided according to topics, are Biodiversity and Bio-Conservation, Health and Medicine, Basic Sciences and Applied Sciences. After break, second Plenary Session presented Prof. Elvira Horandl with presentation entitled Polyploidy ad Hybridization in Plants: Perspectives for a Changing World moderated by Prof. Ir. Bambang Sugiharto, MAgr.Sc., D.Agr.Sc. The first day was closed with second Parallel Session session, which was scheduled in the book of abstract The 4th ICOLIB 2021.

Second day of The 4th ICOLIB was began first Plenary Session with the keynote speaker Prof. Simon C Griffith who delivered presentation The Zebra Finch: Lessons from the Outback Into a ‘Model’ System and Dr. Kahar Muzakhar, S.Si. with presentation The Increasing Value-Added of Polysaccharides-Rich Coffee Pulp Through Microbial Utilization. Both were moderated by Bowo Eko Cahyono, S.Si., Ph.D. After the break, the Parallel Session was continued, the first session and the second session in sequence, with the division of space according to the field. The 4th ICOLIB 2021 event was closed with the second Plenary Session with the keynote speaker Prof. A.G.G. Groothuis with a presentation entitled Who Listens to Mother? A Whole-Family Perspective on the Evolution of Maternal Hormone Allocation and Dr. rer. nat. Christina Bauch with presentation Telomeres and Life-Histories, hosted by moderator Dr. Asmoro Lelono, M.Si.
