Representatives from the Physics Study Program at the FMIPA UNEJ, participated in the International PHITS Workshop and Tutorial 2026 held at Udayana University in Denpasar, Bali. This international workshop a collaboration between the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), and Udayana University served as a platform for sharing knowledge on radiation simulation technology advancements and cancer therapy innovations based on the Particle and Heavy Ion Transport code System (PHITS) software. World-renowned experts attended the event, including Prof. Tatsuhiko Sato (the developer of PHITS) and Dr. Yoshihito Kameda from Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd., alongside participants from various countries.
The participation of the FMIPA UNEJ Physics representatives was part of an effort to enhance human resource capacity in medical physics and nuclear technology in preparation for the launch of a new study program at FMIPA. Participants gained in-depth understanding regarding the use of PHITS for radiation simulation and dosimetry, as well as the development of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT), an emerging cancer therapy technology globally. In addition to attending scientific sessions, participants had the opportunity to engage in direct discussions with international researchers regarding research collaboration opportunities and innovation development in Indonesia.
One of the FMIPA UNEJ Physics representatives noted that the workshop provided fresh insights into the implementation of computational technology in health research. “The material presented directly by the PHITS developers provided a more comprehensive understanding of particle transport simulation for medical applications. Beyond enhancing technical competence, this activity opened up opportunities for research collaboration with various international institutions focused on medical physics and cancer therapy,” the representative stated.
The workshop concluded with a practical session on using the PHITS software, guided directly by Prof. Tatsuhiko Sato. Participants learned about setting up simulation inputs and outputs, basic programming techniques, and the use of artificial intelligence to support analysis processes and troubleshoot issues encountered during simulation modeling. Through participation in this international scientific forum, FMIPA UNEJ hopes to continue strengthening its research culture, enhancing the quality of education, and expanding international collaboration networks in the development of physics and health technology.
